Places of interest of Almaty

Koktobe

Downland is borders on the city in the south. Height 1070 m. There is observation deck on the top. Koktobe - is the best place for looking around the night city. You can get to Koktobe by cableway. Address: Prospect Dostyk up  the street Klochkov.

28 heroes-Panfilovtsev Park

It is situated in the heart of the city. The park is known by memorial of glory, Memory avenue, quenchless flame. There are 28 granite monuments with the name of 28 heroes-panfilovtsev, who died in the battle for Moscow during World War II. Address: Corner of Gogolya and Pushkin  streets.

Svyato-Voznesenskiy Orthodox Cathedral

Designed by local architect A. Zenkov,it  was built without a single nail in the early 20 - century.  The cathedral is one of nine unique monuments of wooden buildings in the world. Its wall paintings and interior decorations amaze visitors with its beauty and splendor. It is notable that the cathedral stood in the strongest earthquake measuring 10 on the Richter scale in 1911. Central Mosque

A grandiose structure, is the largest in Kazakhstan. The majestic building is decorated by marble and colored tiles, made in the Kazakh national motives. The mosque is crowned by a blue dome of diameter of 20 meters and a height of 36 m. The height of minaret  is 47 meters. There are synagogues, Buddhist temples, the different national and cultural centers besides Islamic and Orthodox cultural cernters in Almaty. Address: Pushkin street corner Mametova street.

Republic Square

Republic Square is the Main Square of the city - the place for the festive parades, celebrations, sports festivals, parades, folk festivals. Address: Satpaev street corner Zheltoksan street.

Monument of Independence

Monument is dedicated to the history of the Republic, the complex represents a chronicle of Kazakhstan since the times of Sakas Queen Tomiris till the modern time. There is a symbol of independence - «The Golden Warrior» in the center of the complex. Address: Satpaev Street Corner Bayseitova Street.

The State Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet named after Abay

It was built in 1941. It is the most beautiful building in the style of classic Italian architecture with elements of oriental colors, architecture is based on classical traditions of Kazakh heritage. Address: Kabanbay Batyr street corner Panfilova street.

Palace of the Republic

Main concert hall of the Republic. Great building with unique architecture, with a complex of adjacent buildings, squares and fountains, square named after Abay. Address: Prospect Dostyk corner Abay Avenue.

Central State Museum of Kazakhstan

It is priceless art fund, a national endow of state. There is a large collection of wonderful exhibits in the Museum of Kazakh folk instruments. St. Nicholas Cathedral

It was built in 1908 according to the project of architect N.I. Livanov. It is a monument of church architecture of Christians in Kazakhstan. Home of Textiles «Kzyl-Tang» was built in the early XX century, as a trade house of well known merchant I. Gabduvaliev. Author of project A.P. Zenkov. S.C. “Medeo”

Medeo (kaz. Medeu) - a sports complex, that was built in the mountain gorge Medeo, at an elevation of 1691 meters above sea level, near the southern capital of Kazakhstan - the city Almaty. Nowadays Medeo - is the highest mountain complex in the world for winter sports with the largest area of artificial ice field - 10,5 thousand m ². Mountains and pure mountain water used for the ice helps to achieve high results in skating, for all time, 170 world records were held here. Construction of sport complex began in the autumn of 1949, the first official competitions were held on 4 February 1951. After the dissolution of the USSR «Medeo» fell into decay, the competitions had not been a long time. In 2003, however, was the complete high technical reconstruction of the complex and by 2010 will be built the roof. Base of the ice-rink has the thickness 2.3 m and is consisted of more than 20 kinds of building materials. The structure of base consists of reinforced concrete foundation plates, with 170 km of cooling pipes. System of artificial freezing of the ice has no analogues in the world and allows us to keep the surface of ice skating rink during the 8 months of the year. Ski resort “Shymbulak”

Chimbulak Ski Resort is situated in a picturesque gorge Zaili Alatau at an altitude of 2200m above sea level (25 km from the city). It is famous for its mild climate with many sunny days, firm snow cover from November to May, and beautiful views of surrounding peaks and ridges. Ski trails are serviced by four chairlifts and three rope ropeways. With their help, only in 20 minutes you can get the Talgar Pass (3200m). The first height - to the station «Crossing» (from 2260m to 2630m), with the length 1243m, the lifting time - 9 minutes. The second - to the station «20-th support» (from 2630m to 2930m), length - 948m, liffting time - 7.5 minutes. For fans of snowboarding there is a snowpark. There is a hotel. The average temperature in summer +20 ° C, in winter -7 °. The thickness of snow cover, 1.5-1.8m.
