7-th Asian Games | Astana Almaty 2011

Kazakhstan won the bid to host the 7^th Asian Winter Games 2011. In January 5, 2006, Almaty was selected to host the 7th Asian Winter Games and in March 4, 2006, a trilateral agreement, the Host City Contract, was signed in Kuwait between the Olympic Council of Asia, represented by its president Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah, the city of Almaty, represented by the mayor Mr. Tasmagambetov and the National Olympic Committee of Kazakhstan, represented by its president Mr. Dossymbetov.

In 2007, due to economical and political reasons, the government of the Republic of Kazakhstan proposed the OCA to organise the 7th Asian Winter Games in the two main cities of Kazakhstan - Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, and Almaty.

In October 20, 2008 the additional agreement was concluded and signed in Bali between the Olympic Council of Asia, represented by its president Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah, the city of Astana, represented by its new mayor Mr. Tasmagambetov (former mayor of Almaty), the city of Almaty, represented by its new mayor Mr. Yessimov and the National Olympic Committee of Kazakhstan, represented by its new president Mr. Dosmukhambetov, also Minister of Tourism and Sport.

 

The president of the country, Nursultan Nazarbayev, designated sport as one of the ways to be generally recognized on the international scene. From the middle 90^th of the last century Kazakh athletes began to participate in Asian Games.

For many Asian countries, the Asian Games have the same significance as the Olympic Games. Therefore, preparations and delivery of such a large-scale event will once again demonstrate the leading positions of Kazakhstan in various areas and will be an evident acknowledgement of the country achievements.

Nowadays, in the period of steady progressive development, Kazakhstan has all preconditions to become one of the continent’s biggest powers, able to organize and successfully carry out such a large-scaled event. The preparatory works will facilitate recruitment of able-bodied citizens into the venues construction, enhance city’s infrastructure, advocate healthy life-style, activate administrative structures activity, and attract population (especially students) to communication with guests. In addition the Games are a good experience and a convincing argument in a planning bid to host Winter Olympic Games 2018.

Organizing committee on planning and carrying out of the 7^th Asian Winter Games 2011 in Astana-Almaty chaired by K. Massimov approved the general competition program of the Asian Games.

The Games’ Program comprises 11 sports and envisages awarding of 65 sets of prizes.

The Games program will consist of the following sports disciplines: cross-country skiing, short track speed skating, speed skating, figure skating, biathlon, alpine skiing, freestyle skiing, ski orienteering, ice hockey, ski-jumping and bandy.

About 30 countries are expected to send their sports delegations for the Games.

 

In Addition, within the bounds of the Games the next General Assembly of the Olympic Council of Asia will take place; leaders of sport movement from 45 Asian countries will take part in it.
