Monuments of Astana

A great number of architectural and historical monuments appeared in the city after the time when Astana got status of the capital, and their number is still growing.

The Monument “Friendship of Nations “

Author: Saken Narin.
Material: bronze.

Opening Date: 1 May 2003.

The monument is a bowl, swimming pool with fountains, in center of which there is a bronze sculpture of three joined figures, height of each 8 meters.
According to the author’s idea, the joined branches symbolize clasp hands, friendship, and oath to protect each other, peace and harmony.
There are such joints in topology, which are called cloverleaf. These three joined sleeves without beginning and end mean long life, infinity, happiness and prosperity.

A “forest” of fountains is designed near the monument; each of fountains is situated on the point of intersection of small granite slab. These fountains symbolize ethnic groups and peoples of Kazakhstan. ” Multiple meaning of the composition, a deep philosophical meaning, mysterious tangle of hands, straight rows of playing fountains should cause the feeling of joyful aspirations up, the desire to make the live better, to live in friendship and harmony,” - this is the opinion of the project’s author.
Inhabitants and visitors of the capital will see the monument on the corner of the Republic ave. and Omarov str.

Fountains work “traveling wave” with the sounds of music and beautiful lighting at the bottom on holidays.

“Otan Korgalaushylar” (Defenders of the Motherland)

Author: group of architects and sculptors of Kazakhstan.
Material: copper, granite, bronze.
Opening date: 9 May 2001.

1,300,000 of Kazakh people went to the front, more than half of them, about 700,000 remained on the battlefield forever. It is unforgettable. This memorial should be the example to posterity, because they should know the price of peace. The central figure of the monument - is a woman. For the first time in such a memorial complex woman depicted is not grieving, but smiling, calling for unity and harmony. She holds a golden bowl - a symbol of peace and prosperity. 40-meter arrow, consisting of 101 ears, symbolizes the unity of all nations living in Kazakhstan. On the right side of bas-relief there are Soviet soldiers, on the left side - Kazakh Batyr defeated dzhungar. There is eternal light at the foot of the monument. Around the monument there is a park, which has become one of the favorite places of rest of the inhabitants.

Monument of soldiers - akmolintsam

 Author: V. Pirozhkov.
Material: bronze.
Opening date: 9 May 1995.

34,000 soldiers did not return to Akmola from the war. It is - every fifth inhabitant of Akmola. Until 1995, there was no monument to the deceased soldiers in the city. In honor of 50 anniversary of the Victory this monument was inaugurated. The monument is simple and at the same time full of great meaning. Two soldiers with an honest, young faces are going to the front. The work of the sculpture draws the eye. Construction of the monument was carried out at the people’s money. The Monument is dedicated to soldiers of 310, 387 and 72 Guards Division, who fell in the fight against the German fascist invaders.

Memorial of soldiers died in Afghanistan

Author: Slidenko, Taysengirov and Dosmagambetov.
Material: granite.
Opening Date: 7 May 2000.

The monument is open on the Day of Defenders of the Motherland. Ten years, Afghan soldiers were collecting funds for the purchase of expensive material. And this hour has come. From now and forever the names of 761 Afghan soldiers are written at the monument of granite slabs. Interesting fact: Memorial to sanctified by father Constantine, who was fighting in the faraway country.

Bata

Author: painter and sculptor Arman Bektasov.
Material: bronze and stone.
Opening Date: 10 June 2000.

Bata - the author called his creation by Kazakh word “blessing”. This symbol of blessing will welcome all arriving to Astana and departing from Astana people. The monument has the form of an arch and symbolizes the threshold “bosaga” - the beginning of a journey. You can also see “Besik - the cradle, the symbol of life, men and women. The base is “taytuyak” - the well-being and prosperity of the family. The disc at the top of the monument, which is tengrianski symbol, its shiny surface reflects the sun and sky. Water in a fountain is a life-spring and is a logical addition to the symbols of everyday life.

New Square (Chupa-chups)

Author: Azat Boyarlin.
Material: bronze, stone.
Opening Date: July 6, 2000.

The main purpose of this construction - unity of the people and prosperity of the country, humanity and the continuity of generations, aspirations for the future - is centralized in the sculptural complex of fountain. In the center of Fountain - Tree of Life, three-fold concept of the world where the roots - is an underground world, our ancestors, the body -is the middle world, we live, the future - spirituality and future of our descendants. Around the monument there are four figures of animals symbolizing four world elements: Water - Bull, Land - Camel, Fire - Aries, and Wisdom - Dragon. The construction has only symbolic character, the eternal cycle of life. The fountain has three floors: the water from the crown falls to the first floor than, the water coming from the mouths of each symbolic animal goes to the second. His other flows towards the top, add inexhaustible source. Opening the square timed to the 60 th anniversary of the President of Kazakhstan. For the construction of the monument several residential apartment buildings was demolished. All of them were in perfect condition.

Khan Kene
Author: Nurlan Dolbaev sculptor, architect Shota Valikhanov.
Material: granite, bronze.
Opening Date: 10 May 2001.

Monument of Kenesary Kasymov. The height of the rider -7, a pedestal - 6 meters. Total weight - 10 tons. Kenesary Kasymov - is Ablai Khan’s grandson, the last Kazakh Khan, tried to defend the independence of the country and fought with Russia and Kakandski, Khiva khanates and with his brothers Kyrgyz people but they killed him. The head of Khan Kene was taken to St. - Petersburg, where it is presented in alcoholized form in the museum.

Abai
Author: Tohtar Ermekov sculptor, architect Nurbek Auzhanov.
Material: bronze.
Opening Date: 10 June 2000.

The monument is situated in the central square near with Russian “Alfa - Bank”, obviously there was a special meaning, because the great Abay always said: “Be friends with Russian people - they are a source of knowledge.” In our situation, they are also a source of finance. Pedestal is made in the form of a piece of steppe road, among which 3.5-meter bronze Abai is going. He holds a book in his hand, looking forward thoughtfully, as if thinking about history of his native land.

Central Square
Author: Dosmagambetov Tolegen.
Material: granite, bronze.
Opening Date: 10 June 1999.

The square consists of a set of sculptures and fountains, representing the majesty and power of our state. The composition is located along the central long line and is designed for the walk. Little girl and boy on both sides of the fountain symbolize the future of our country. The wolf and the leopard are the sacramental symbols and totemic idols of our remote ancestors who had so truly heroic types.

Snow leopards
Author: Dosmagambetov Tolegen. Material: bronze and marble.

Stone sculptures installed at the entrance to the city, they open the gates to all guests and at the same time protect the city, and are ready to fight with the enemy instantly. The idea of creating snow leopards with the review on the levee looks like a European interpretation of the exotic eastern rarities.

Memorial of the Victims of Political Repression

Author: Boyarlin A sculptor, architects Montyhaev K, Suleymenov T.
Material: Granite, Copper.
Opening Date: June 6, 1997.

The base of the monument is a simple, but oldest grave construction, its height of 27 meters. The 55 steps stair leads to the up, and there are bas-relief images on the right side, there are broken Shanyrak on the wall, dry land and the silhouettes of people - crying about the innocent dead people. The main idea of the memorial - to preserve for descendants the memory about the difficult historical period in the life of their people. The foundation of Memorial was built in the day of opening of the 4 th session of the Assembly of Peoples of Kazakhstan.

Pushkin
Author: Honored Artist of Russia Andrey Kovalchuk.
Material: bronze.
Opening Date: August 1999.

The monument was made in the extraordinary dynamic composition and represents a figure of the poet going ahead in the moment of creative inspiration. The sculptor was able to merge together the impulse and concentration. The monument - is a gift to the city from the President of the Swiss company “Merkata Traiding” Victor Stolpovskih.

Saken Seifullin
Author: Azat Boyarlin.
Material: bronze and granite.
Opening Date: 14 October 1994.

A monument to the founder of Kazakh literature is a sitting figure of the poet. Quiet, easy motion and the internal rhythm - is the image of the writer, expressed in the monument. The monument is set to the date of 100 th anniversary of the poet.

A monument of justice

Author: sculptor Mansurov M.A., Architect Zharylgapov K. J.
The material - bronze.

The monument symbolizes the continuity of centuries-old tradition - justice, national unity. The majestic bearing, noble faces - Kazybek-bi, Aiteke bi, Tole-bi.

Kabanbay - Batyr

Author: Architect Sadvakas Agitaev.
Materials: red brick, metal.
Opening Date: 3 November 2000.

The opening of the monument of famous batir was on the 3d of November 2000 in the place Saryadar in the village Rozhdestvenka. 25-meter height mausoleum was established in the burial place of batir. Mausoleum has the shape of a military helmet. Ideal, severe forms of ribbed walls emphasize the upward aspiration of the whole mausoleum. On the top of the monument there is the metal upward. Kabanbay went against the enemy without turning his heard. Detachment under his leadership, defeated dzhungar and rescued Kazakh people from the death. The hero died at the age of 78 years, young dzhigit killed him.

Squares of Astana

Astana is changing for the better every day, and this changes notice not only the inhabitants, but also visitors of the capital. Not only architectural masterpieces, but also a lot of new squares delight the eye.

Square in the micro-district Al-Farabi

The area of the square -0.9 ha.
The area of landscaping -6570 sq. m.
The area of pavements, sidewalks, grounds- 2430 sq.m.

Square was created on a vacant area adjacent to domestic house. Town Square is a green plot, designed for calm short and active leisure (sports and children’s playground). According to the project there are two types of planting -heavy trees - series (wayside trees) and the planting of trees and bushes planted in the landscape groups.

Square on Munaytpasov str.

The area of the square- 0.95 ha
The area of landscaping - 7430 sq. m.
The area of pavement, sidewalks, grounds-2070 sq.m.

Plan of squire was designed according to the existing plantings from previous years, mainly poplar balsamic, which influenced the creation of such a planning structure of square, which can be divided into three parts.

-The first free-path made of flagstone through of the existing plantations of poplar, with the place for rest in the centre of this part of squire;
-The second, located in the center the square - it is designed in form of two ovals of different sizes.

In the centre there is a place for a small fountain and there is the main of flower beds.

The third part has a long, elongated plan’s structure, along Munaytpasova Street. There are children’s park and sports fields in this part of the squire.

Lilac Boulevard (Serenivii Boulevard)

The area of the avenue -6, 4 ha
The area of landscaping -52193 sq.m.
The area of pavements, sidewalks, grounds - 9641 sq.m.

Boulevard was built in the territory, along Sari-arka Street, city main with heavy traffic. Among informal arrangement there are also grounds for the rest of people within the 47 m. Boulevard

Landscape is consisted of ordinary planting trees and shrubs, lawns and flower beds. Avenue is designed as system of modular squares of flower beds and lawns.

The avenue is formed by plantings of maple, birch, lilac and apple trees which with the lapse of time will create a play of light-and-shade and separate pedestrian area from the roadway, protecting it from dust, noise, gas.

Lilacs planted in a row at a distance of 1 m, their bloom in the spring will create special memorable appearance of an avenue, which influenced the name of the boulevard - “Lilac”.

Along Sary-arka Street along the full length of the boulevard there is hedge of Chinese elm. There are 148 benches and a great number of lamps of four types.

Square of “Chess players” (corner of Kenesary street -Republic avenue)

The area of square- 0.86 ha
The area of landscaping - 7900 sq. m.
The area of pavements, sidewalks, grounds- 700 sq.m.

In the center of square is a playground of colored pavement tiles, in the form of the chess board with floor chess pieces for the game of chess for inhabitants, and also for chess tournaments.

There are three compositions of Chinese elm and Almond tree in design. Hedge of chokeberry and Chinese elm creates a special appearance of square.

Boulevard on Ablai Khan avenue

The area of boulevard-0.71ga
The area of landscaping, 6130 sq. m.
The area of pavements, sidewalks, grounds- 970 sq.m.

Boulevard is situated between the existing residential development and the carriageway of Ablai Khan Avenue from the Musrepov Street up to Mustafin Street. Design of boulevard was made according to existing plantings of previous years: Poplar balsamic, pyramidal hybrid poplar, elm, maple.

Landing of formed elm with boulders at the foot is designed, at the entrance to the boulevard, in the center of the ring.
Three small areas for recreation are situated according to the most favorable placement of them under the existing plantings.
Composite accents of boulevard are emphasized by hedge of spiraea, unpretentious and long flowering.

Design of flower beds are made each year separately, prior to planting seedlings in the flowerbeds.

Park on Gumilyov Street (Tashenov str.)

The area of park-1.75 ha
The Area of landscaping - 13,369 sq.m.
The area of pavements, sidewalks, grounds, 4104 sq.m.

Park on Gumilyov street is situated between the levee of the river Ak-Bulak and Gumilev street from Eurasian University and up to the synagogue. Square is designed according to the planting of previous years, consisting mainly of the Tatarian maple, elm and Common birch.

Promenade walkway, beginning at the levee and has a free form of sinusoids, bends, connects different parts of square, giving vivacity to all composition.

Closer to Gumilev street according to the plan there should be the rotunda, facing the facade to the north on the existing elevation.

Entrance areas of the square are decorated by annual plant flowers, hedge of Chinese elm and groups of ordinary lilac. Bright, central line is formed by Chinese elm and Ussuri pear.

Square “Northern Crown” on Kabanbay-Batyr avenue

The area of square -1, 5 ha
The area of landscaping -11582 sq.m.
The area of pavements, sidewalks, grounds- 3418 sq.m.

The Park was established on the basis of existing green areas, which is situated at the entrance to the city in the Chubary micro-district on Kabanbay-Batyr avenue.

The territory of the projected park, is situated in the lowlands, the existing trees are represented mainly by heavy trees of ash-leaved maple and balsamic poplar, planted 15-20 years ago.

The range of trees and shrubs selected from the local, acclimatized material, taking into account the existing, already established range and taking into account the requirements for the Shade of individual plants.
The system of paths and grounds includes several flights of stairs, retaining wall, and place for the rest.

Paths are made of blocks of different colors.

The project envisages the installation of benches (24 pcs.) boxes and lamps, as well as special lighting - illumination of the park green light, to emphasize the area of the square from the side of carriageway and the bridge.
In the central part of park is situated a mobile flower bed specifically designed by landscape designer.

Small architectural forms arranged in the form of espalier -towers with benches, on the open-work specially designed grids are placed lianas of vine.

Square of “Football players” on Pobeda Avenue

The area of square-1, 35 ha
The area of landscaping, 5546 sq. m.
The area of pavements, sidewalks, grounds, 2571 sq.m.

Square created on the territory of Central Stadium named after Munaitpassov, previously completely covered with asphalt, and only partially used for parking official vehicles, but mostly empty.

Rest areas, look like thread to the main system of sidewalks, are made in the form of the circle and in the form of shells, with small architectural forms. Small architectural forms (SAF) are presented by specially designed for this square, a football made of the carpet of plants (cineraria and alternator) and the decorative fountain.
SAF in the form of football has no analogues in the Astana; it was carried out by specialists of “Zelenstroy on a specially developed technology from the single modules 6-grannikov-boxes with the plants set out in the main frame made of metal. Carpet plants were brought to the city flower beds cuttings from Russia, because only in these way possible to create such forms. To save water and plant alimentation according to the project required addition of special HYDROGEL was added to the soil.

Square on Irchenko Street

The area o square-0, 3 ha
The area of landscaping, 2079 sq. m.
The area of pavements, sidewalks, grounds- 868 sq.m.

Square is created on the territory adjacent to a residential home. For spring flowering were selected pear Ussuriisk and honeysuckle in hedge.

Autumn decorative view is achieved by red tones of the foliage and fruits of Ussuri pear. In winter, well-formed limbs of trees in the form of balls, willows and hedge of Chinese elm make the park laconic, color of bark pears - gray and red - create an additional color accent in the general composition of the square.

Square in the district of the house number 55 on Moskovskaya Street

The area of the square -1, 6 ha
The area of landscaping -12430 sq.m.
The area of pavements, sidewalks, grounds- 3570 sq.m.

Square created on the territory adjacent to the telecom centre, mostly empty.
This territory is intended for reconstruction, surrounded by a fence and has a bowl of the fountain in diameter of 15 meters.
On this area will be Main Avenue and a number of paths, connecting transit pedestrian sidewalk with square. At the territory there is the arbor-rotunda with benches made according to  special project and intended for rest, with the planting of plants for vertical gardening.
According to the project there will be landed Lian - Grape maiden in special vases, columns, and inside the arbor rotundas.
